Suspected arsonist planned Japan's worst mass killing in 18 years (Japan)
More than three dozen people died when a fire, possibly caused by arson, broke out at a studio managed by animation production company Kyoto Animation Co. in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, on Thursday morning.
木曜日の朝、京都の伏見にある、京都アニメーションのスタジオが放火により全焼し、30人以上の人々が亡くなった。
The Kyoto city fire department initially confirmed that one person had died, but dozens were later found in cardiac arrest inside the three-story building. The Kyoto Prefectural Police later confirmed that 33 people had died.
京都市消防局ははじめ、1人の死亡を確認したが、後に3階に渡る建物で、数十人が心不全で死亡していたという。京都府警は後に33人が亡くなったと確認した。
According to the fire department, a nearby resident made an emergency call at about 10:35 a.m., saying they had heard the sound of an explosion.
消防局によると、午前10時35分に近隣住民から通報があり、爆発の音が聞こえてきたという。
Officials of the prefectural police rushed to the studio and found a man, 41, on a road near the studio. The man told them, “I sprinkled liquid on the first floor and set it on fire.”
京都府警察はスタジオに急行し、スタジオ近くの道路で41歳の男を発見した。男性は彼らに対し、「1階に液体をまき、火をつけた。」と供述した。
Police said the man was injured and was receiving treatment at a hospital. Before the fire broke out, the man allegedly entered the building while screaming “Die!”
警察によると、その男はけがをしており、病院で処置を受けていたという。火をつける前に男は伝えられるところによると、「死ね！」と叫びながら建物に侵入したという。
According to police, a knife was found in connection with the incident. Police said they would question the man on suspicion of arson.

According to the Kyoto Animation website, the company was established in 1981 and its head office is located in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture. The studio has produced many popular TV anime works(K-ON!, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya).
